The Long & Short History
of Africa in Oz
Whitlam,
Gorton, Selassie

African Australian history: does it exist? After blowing the dust off the archives and plucking the cobwebs off the document files, we found a wealth of information awaiting the savvy researcher. We already learnt about Africans arriving in Australia in 1788 (see features) And a quick look at the Australian Archives revealed a visit by the first 'African head of state' almost 200 years later in 1968: Ethiopian Emperor Haile Selassie, pictured here shaking hands with then-opposition leader Gough Whitlam (left) and Australian Prime Minister John Gorton (centre)...

In his welcoming speech for Emperor Selassie, Mr Whitlam noted that the visit should serve to heighten Australia's awareness of its relationship to Africa. "Our present preoccupation with China and South-East Asia has tended to concentrate our attention of the Pacific," said Mr Whitlam, "But we are an Indian Ocean power as well as a Pacific power. More than one third of our coastline looks out on to the Indian Ocean."

When Mr Whitlam later became Australian Prime Minister, he banned visits by South African (racially selected) sporting teams to Australia and supported African decolonisation (See Whitlam Institute website). His successor, Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Fraser went on to dedicate much of his life after politics to humanitarian work in Africa through Care Australia.

Judging from a chat with archival researchers, there are still plenty of primary sources waiting to be analysed and unearthed in terms of documents, photos and other material relating to Africa in Australian history - relating to foreign policy, perceptions of Africa, immigration and community history.

And for anyone wanting more information on the Haile Selassie visit - the Rasta in Oz site has a collection of Australian newspaper clippings.
